So there seems to be some kind of correlation between political technologists and lighting designers. I’m really not kidding. There’s any number of times when we’ve been sitting around at a concert or a conference and noticed that 5 of us were looking at the Source4 hanging from some really scary “truss” or caught ourselves correcting the advance guys on the color temperature for lighting.
It’s surprising given that political data and tech are all about the science and statistics and lighting design is often best described as “visual music.” Then again, it’s part art and science on both sides. More often than not, we focus on the statistics so we can intuitively grasp the larger trends.
How many times have you found yourself playing your fingers across a QUERTY keyboard and imagining that it was a show desk of some kind? Man, what I’d give to be able to drive VAN using a Hog.
In that vein, what did you do before you took your current job?
I’d much rather drive the VAN with a PM5D than with a hog. All the sliders could map well into model score selections, and the matrix mixer would work perfect for and/or logic, and the output routing section could split lists well for different channels against the same universes.
I’m constantly reminded of my sound technician days when I work on systems integrations. In the end it’s making sure that a whole lot of pipes line up with each other in the right places.
